Local SEO basics for trade businesses
March 11, 2026 · local-seo, guides
Local SEO for a trade business is not complicated, but it is detailed. This is the checklist that matters, in the order it matters.
1. Claim and complete the business profile
The free business profile on the major search platform is still the single highest-return item. Complete every field: categories, service area, hours, services, and photos of finished work rather than stock images.
2. Fix name, address and phone consistency
Pick one exact form of the business name, address and phone number, and use that form everywhere. Mismatches across directories are the most common reason a legitimate business ranks below a competitor.
3. Build one page per service and city
A single "Services" page listing twelve things will lose to a competitor with a page dedicated to "water heater replacement in Bethesda, MD". Write the page for someone who has that exact problem in that exact place.
4. Publish real evidence
Project photos with captions, before-and-after sets, permit and licence numbers, and specifics about materials. This is what converts a visitor and what a search engine reads as substance.
5. Ask for reviews, every job
A short text message after the final walkthrough, with a direct link. Volume matters less than a steady, recent flow.
6. Speed and mobile
Most local service searches happen on a phone, often outdoors. If the page takes six seconds and the phone number is not tappable, the lead is gone regardless of ranking.
None of this requires an agency retainer. It requires someone to do it once, properly, and then keep the reviews coming.
